A strange woman walks into Pat Tierney's office with a young boy and shatters precious memories of Pat's dead husband. The desperate woman claims the boy is the son of Pat's husband, and she needs someone to safeguard him from eminent danger until she can straighten things out. Pat has two troublesome teenage daughters at home and stress at work, why should she take on a stranger's child?

What would you do? I asked myself this question as I read the novel. At first I wouldn't believe the woman, neither did Pat. Would I be polite? No. Could I learn to accept the truth and love a boy who looked exactly like my dead husband? That's the crux of the novel. Pat's heartbroken by her husband's betrayal but the boy needs a safe harbor. The next day the boy's mother turns up dead, and Pat realizes her own family might be in danger.

This is a complex story filled with the type of international intrigue that could be ripped from modern day headlines. It takes place in Canada but might happen anywhere. There is a place called Safe Harbor, meant to give refugees a place to stay while the government decides their cases. But Safe Harbor doesn't live up to its name or purpose.

The stories of all the characters are expertly intertwined by a talented author, who makes the reader care what happens to Pat Tierney and her small family. I held my breath when danger loomed and sighed with relief when...you'll need to find out for yourself. If you enjoy mystery, suspense, and a bit of romance this is a book that gives you everything in one place.

I started to read Safe Harbor on a whim. What an excellent choice!

I enjoyed the story line, however I enjoyed Ms. McCracken's use of modern day events, bringing to light the stuggles of immigrants, the danger they are in, as well as giving the reader a mini history lesson in regard to Eastern Europe as well as Russia, with a twist of the Muslim Culture, and the struggles young women have when they move to a "Westernized" country.

Their were many points in the book where a reader could see their own family struggles, sibblings driffing apart, not understanding each other, sibbling jealousy, even as adults, teenagers being, well teenagers, and a mother accepting her daughter for who she is.

All this while the life of a 7 year old boy, who through no faults of his own, is thrown into circumstances no adult, much less a child show be thrown in to, is also part of the story line.

I must stay I am rooting for a Tierney/Hardy romance!
Finally! A book whose main character isn't a 20 year old shopaholic, vampire chasing, angst filled, stereotype romance bodice ripper.
Pat is an adult, recently widowed, with grown children. She is mostly sensible, smart, and has enough insecurities to make her seem real. She has real life worries about her business making enough money, unlike a lot of books that the characters just seem to be rich and never worry about money.
So how does a woman like this end up involved in solving a murder, or multiple murders?
It started out with finding out her late husband had cheated on her and fathered a child. The child's mother dumps the little boy on her and is subsequently murdered. Now Pat is stuck with a child that reminds her of her husband that she loved very much. She needs the murder solved and get the child returned to the mothers family so that she can get on with life and try to forget her husbands betrayal.
I like this character - I could see this becoming a series. She is younger that Miss Marple, or the lady from Murder She Wrote, but more mature than a Stephanie Plum. The writing was good, and the book was suspenseful.
I enjoyed the storyline, but felt it was a bit unbelievable that an intelligent, middle aged, investment advisor would get involved, and continue to be involved in a criminal investigation! Many times she pursued a foolish belief that she could do better than the police and left it to the last moment to advise them of important information she gained, preferring to barge in trying to solve the problem herself. Please, a bit more credibility (e.g. if Pat was a PI instead of an investment councilor) would have made this a good book.
Michael was gone, but in his place is Tommy. And he needs someone to protect him and keep him safe. Jade had made that obvious, but protect him from what? Who? And why? So starts a pattern of days trying to wade through a labyrinth of people and places to find the one(s) who want to hurt Tommy.

It's not as if she doesn't have enough problems. New people who just expect her to fall in with their plans. A new boyfriend that she's not sure she wants. Disappearing kids and at the heart of it all, a little boy she's growing to love.

If you like suspense and mystery, you should like this book. I started it yesterday and finished at 3 am in the morning! I definitely recommend at and can't wait to read the next one.
Pat Tierney is a financial advisor, a widow with two daughters, living a relatively comfortable life until Jude Seaton comes to her office and informs her that her late-husband, Michael, was the father of 7-year-old Tommy, Jude’s son. She tells Pat that Tommy is in danger and asks her to care for him until she ‘takes care of some business.’ When Jude is later found murdered, Pat finds herself immersed in the bloody world of immigrant smuggling, body parts trafficking, and money laundering, and the target of a killer.
Safe Harbor, a first novel by Rosemary McCracken is a moving story of human relationships and the lengths to which a woman will go to protect her family. In addition, it is filled with suspense and action from page one. McCracken demonstrates a mastery of her craft that is seldom found in the first effort, with characters that you immediately love or hate, and action scenes that ratchet the tension to stratospheric levels.
We often think of good thrillers as books we can sink our teeth into, but this is one that will sink its teeth into you and hang on like an angry pit bull. If you think the life of a financial advisor is all about spread sheets and stock movements; think again. Pat Tierney is a protagonist to keep an eye out for.
